St. Angelo Fort
A Majestic Sentinel of the Arabian Sea
St. Angelo Fort, also known as Kannur Fort, is a 500-year-old historical landmark that stands as a proud reminder of Kerala’s colonial past. Constructed in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, this massive laterite stone fort was a strategic military base used by the Portuguese to support their naval operations in Goa and Malacca.
Perched dramatically on a cliffside overlooking the Arabian Sea, the triangular-shaped fort is surrounded by manicured gardens and features ancient chapels, stables, a prison, and an old ammunition house. One of the notable landmarks within the fort is a gravestone belonging to a Dutch commander’s family—an echo of the fort’s varied colonial occupants.
Stroll along the ramparts and take in panoramic views of the sea, Moppila Bay Harbour, and the preserved canons still guarding the coastline. The fort is especially enchanting during early mornings or sunsets. You may also come across the open-air amphitheatre where seasonal light and sound shows are occasionally hosted.
